Learning Outcomes
Please describe the learning outcomes of the course: Knowledge, skills and abilities acquired after the successful completion of the course.
The course aims to introduce students to the macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of wood, its structural errors ( ή structural defects of wood), its properties as well as the mechanisms of deterioration of wood under the influence of biotic and abiotic factors

Upon successful completion of the course the students will be able to:

• Know the characteristics of structure and chemical composition of wood and how they change in and between forest trees

• Recognize with the help of microscopic and macroscopic identification keys the wood of the main conifers and broadleaves of Greece

• Know the structural defects of wood as well as the effect they have on the appearance and properties of wood

• They know the basic properties of wood which affect its utilization in products and constructions

• Determine by laboratory means the density, humidity, dimensional changes and mechanical properties of wood

·        They know the factors of wood deterioration and the consequences they have

1.      Macroscopic characteristics of transverse – radial – tangential surface Physical characteristics of wood

2.      Tiny characteristics of wood cells and tissues. Coniferous and broadleaf cells

3.      Chemical composition of wood. Cell wall structure – intercellular layer – adhesions. Distribution of chemical components in the cell wall.

4.      Mechanism of wood production. The cambium. Stages of evolution of wood cells.

5.      Variability of structure and chemical composition of wood. Wood quality control. Structure of the wood of the branches – roots.

6.      Structural defects of wood. Growing irregularities. Natural growth characteristics.

7.      Density – Relationships between density and moisture – structure – chemical composition of wood.

8.      Hygroscopicity. Moisture of the wood in the trees and as a material. Absorption – adsorption Equivalent moisture.

9.      Casting and swelling. Factors affecting the dimensional changes of wood. Casting – swelling anisotropy. Significance and limitation of shedding and swelling.

10.   Mechanical properties. Factors affecting the mechanical strength of wood. Basic and allowed trends.

11.   Thermal properties. Contraction Dilation. Thermal conductivity – specific heat – calorific value.

12.   Acoustic properties. Speed ​​of sound propagation in wood. Electrical properties. DC resistance. Dielectric properties.

13.   Alteration/deterioration of the wood. Bacteria – pigments and septic fungi – insects – marine wood-eating organisms. Climatic – mechanical – chemical alteration factors

Identification of wood samples

Students with identified dyslexia problems are examined orally.

The topics of the written final exam indicate the points with which each question is graded. The students’ grades are announced publicly. The student can see his / her writing at any time

ANNEX OF THE COURSE OUTLINE

 

Alternative ways of examining a course in emergency situations

Evaluation methods: (2) Written examination by remote methods, provided that the integrity and reliability of the examination are ensured
Implementation Instructions: (3) The examination of the course will be carried out through eclass according to the examination program. Students who have institutional accounts, have registered for the course and have learned the terms of distance education can take part. Students after their composition in eclass will randomly receive, from a question pool, 20 questions that you must answer in 15 minutes. Each of the questions will be graded 0.5.

The examination of the laboratory part of the course will be carried out in eclass medium according to the examination program. Students who have institutional accounts, have registered for the course and have learned the terms of distance education can take part. Students after their composition in eclass will randomly receive, from a question pool, 10 questions that they must answer in 10 minutes. Each of the questions will be graded with 1.0
